What to Know Before You Go
So, you're moving into a new house. Will it make you say Yeah or Yikes? Moving is a stressful time. Our REALTORS® at RE/MAX DFW Associates have created this list of the ten most common moving mistakes to avoid to help you plan ahead.
#1: Not giving yourself enough time – Nothing makes a move more stressful than waiting until the last minute and then having to overextend yourself to make it happen. All sorts of issues can arise, from late-night packing sessions to the inability to find a quality mover because the best ones are booked up. Instead of scrambling and spending extra money, give yourself enough time to make a well-thought-out plan and secure quality services.
#2: Underestimation – Another big moving issue comes from underestimating the breadth of your task. This includes packing materials, size of the moving truck, and the amount of time you need to get things done. It’s better to err on the side of too much than not enough.
#3: Forgetting to label – When you get to the other end of the move you’ll want to unpack the essential items first. If you have boxes with nothing written on them it’s hard to know what’s what. Instead of making that mistake, label the outsides as you go along, and even write which room it belongs to if you want to make it even easier to unpack efficiently. Moving tip: Put the most important boxes in your car—the ones you’ll need the first night in the new place.
#4: Not getting measurements – It’s wise to know your clearance on the other end of the move. What might fit in your current house may not fit in your new one. Measure furniture, entries, and rooms, and confirm things will fit before paying to move bigger items.
#5: Not researching your moving company – Not all moving companies are created equal. Remember that these people will be handling your belongings, including the fragile, valuable, and treasured ones. The moment you know you are moving, start looking for a reputable mover with competitive prices. Book as early as possible, since they will probably be popular. Moving tip: Make sure to get an estimate and contract.
#6: You don’t factor in potential issues – Just because you pick a day and time doesn’t mean that everything will be perfect. In fact, you should prepare for potential weather, traffic, and emotional issues. Also remember you’ll need to clean the space you’re leaving, so leave time to do that, or have a cleaning service scheduled and ready to go.
#7: You forget about your pets – Your pets are going to be experiencing the same stress you are. Research the best techniques for moving them, whether they’re a dog, horse, or pet fish.
#8: You forget your outdoor space – If you have an outdoor space, don’t forget to factor in any furniture, tools, shed contents, potted plants, and other things that will need to be moved. Both you and the movers need all the information.
#9: Forgetting to Change your Address – Before the move you’ll need to contact various companies, utilities, the post office, and anything that would affect your finances and services if it’s not transferred to the new home.
#10: You pack inefficiently – Brush up on packing 101 before you begin. Some good rules of thumb include no heavy items in big boxes, know where your valuables are, backup your computer before breaking it down, and make sure to leave the important stuff out until absolutely necessary.
